The Homeschooling Revolution

July 30, 2007

Principled? Yes. Sincere? Yes. Conservative? Well ...

The Home School Legal Defense Association's PAC has endorsed Mike Huckabee for president. Not a shocker given that the former Arkansas governor is an ordained Baptist minister, staunch pro-lifer, friend of homeschoolers, and Iraq War supporter. He's even married to his high school sweetheart which given the marital piccadillos of several of the Republican candidates is quite the personal feat.

I met Mr. Huckabee at a party in D.C., several years ago. His band, "Capitol Offense," provided the entertainment. On a whim, I decided to interview him and found him to be an affable man with a sense of humor. A talented musician, too.

But he's auditioning for the role of president as a "principled conservative," not vying for Mr. Congeniality or for a spot on "America's Got Talent." His political positions deserve scrutiny. As I've previously noted, his views on public education are similar to that of Congressman Dennis Kucinich, the left's lefty. Indeed, Mr. Huckabee is a 'for the children' candidate in that expensive, legalistic kind of way. (Scroll down.)

While Attorney Farris may be impressed with the Arkansan's 'secure the borders' rhetoric, Allan Wall sure isn't.

A couple of Paulite bloggers are miffed by HSLDA's choice.

But this we can agree on: Candidates are courting homeschooelrs early in the game.

So, who is going to look our way next? My money's on Rep. Tancredo.

Update: Conressman Duncan Hunter also weighs in on homeschooling. Go down to number 16.

All's fair in love and war: Mike's son, David, is getting noticed. Not Patrick Henry College material, is he?
