The Homeschooling Revolution

February 03, 2006

Update 70: Check it out, a statistical analysis report, hot off the presses, by the fedgov: "Homeschooling in the United States: 2003."

Update 71: Barb passed along an article from the UK which notes that modern kids are A-list dummies. Or, as it was put, "Far from getting cleverer, our 11-year-olds are, in fact, less 'intelligent' than their counterparts of 30 years ago."

Update 72: The manager of a locally-owned movie theater, in our city, kindly gave the Ironman six free tickets to her establishment. We're not big movie-goers, but, occasionally, it's a fun date. We checked out the current offerings and narrowed down our choices to Nanny McPhee and Glory Road. (Yes, we know EOTS is still out there. But we are still in a boycott mode toward movies that are financed by religious folks who make their fortunes selling over-priced wares stamped with 'Philippians 4:13' on one side and 'made in China' on the other.)

The basketball movie made the cut; intense yet (largely) clean with an endearing cast. The storyline centers around the risk-taking Coach Don Haskins. The actor who plays him is excellent.

Side note - a trailer of Akeelah and the Bee was shown. A Hollywood flick, starring well-known actors, about the national spelling contest. Intriguing.

Update 73: FYI: Human Events, the longtime conservative weekly, has noted, via the Pearcey Report, that Pastor R.C. Sproul, Jr., has been "defrocked." This blog doesn't concern itself with confusing in-house denominational battles. But I'm linking to it, as a newsworthy item, because Mr. Sproul, who is a homeschool parent, has a strong following among Reformed Christian home educators.

Update 74: A Golden State Warrior public relations employee got canned for emailing risqué prom photos with very coarse captions. The pix have been circulating around the 'net for awhile, but the outlandish fashion statements are fodder for the WWHF (Why We Homeschool File).

Update 75: G-school custodian, age 41, in suburban school district, is charged with 31 counts of child sex abuse. But there are intellectuals who want to turn over school management to the janitors ...

Update 76: Brandon found several nifty quotes, about education and maturity, in a 1998 Wall Street Journal article. For instance: “The idea that people need to wait for marriage and the idea that every idiot needs a college degree are relatively recent creations. The result has been a progressive infantilization of the Western world."

Update 77: The signs point to another Carnival of Homeschooling. It is numero six.

Update 78: An orange Peterbilt 387, with a sleeper and a generator, is a work of art and a force of nature. I'm happy for the Ironman as he gets ready to become an owner-operator and launch a family business.

Update 79: Coach Mike Holmgren takes a shot, and I don't blame him: "We knew it was going to be tough going up against the Pittsburgh Steelers. I didn't know we were going to have to play the guys in the striped shirts as well." Livid fans are circulating a petition.
