The Mystery of Carolyn Keene's Identity

Nancy Drew could be an annoying, preppy Little Miss Perfect, but there's no question she is an enormously popular fictional heroine. Countless number of girls grew up reading these mysteries. I still remember this cover of the classic, The Secret of the Old Clock.

This summer, Warner Brothers will be releasing a movie about the girlish sleuth, and introducing her to a new generation. Emma Roberts, Julia's teen-aged niece, has been cast as Nancy.

In 1999, Salon interviewed Mildred Wirt Benson (who played the first "Carolyn Keene"). She was asked if Miss Drew was a feminist. Mildred's intriguing answer is here.
