DaveLoneRanger, who regularly finds meaty homeschool tidbits to pass along, sent an alert about an Illinois bill which will expand truancy laws. Synopsis of SB 0543: "Amends the School Code. Requires a person having custody or control of a child who is below the compulsory school age and who is enrolled in kindergarten in a public school to cause the child to attend the public school. Includes in the definition of 'dropout' a child enrolled in kindergarten. Effective June 30, 2007." There is also this bill which would alter the compulsory education age.
Barb, another activist who is vigilant about keeping up with excesses in education, sends a story about a school district in California where parents are monetarily penalized for allowing their children to play hooky.
