Rigor Mortis for the Western World's Former Lingua Franca?
Perhaps the cadre of homeschoolers who are diligently studying Latin will be among the remnant that keeps the language alive for future generations, because even the Vatican City's Latinist, Reginald Foster, has declared it is "dying" in the Catholic Church.
The Telegraph explains how the ancient Indo-European language is still flickering in Europe: "Italy is, however, different: all schoolchildren, except those who attend technical colleges, must be taught Latin for at least four hours a week until they are 18.
Adds Father Foster: "You need to present the language as a living thing. You do not need to be mentally excellent to know Latin. Prostitutes, beggars and pimps in Rome spoke Latin, so there must be some hope for us."
LOL. That's a unique way to motivate miserabile vulgus (the pathetic masses) into learning.
