Home Educator Turned Legislator Offers English-Only Bill

Rep. George Faught of Oklahoma is a freshman legislator from Muskogee and a homeschool dad. He's stirring the (melting) pot with a bill which would make ingles the Sooner's State official language. If House Bill 1423 becomes law, it would require all state business to be conducted in English.

The bill passed out of committee with a 9-7 vote (musta been a spirited debate) and can now go before the full house. Rep. Jason Murphey says he intends to vote for the proposal.

Activist American Indians are urging lawmakers to vote against Rep. Faught's bill because it's "intolerant." One activist claims that public schools will be negatively affected if the bill passes: "... George Tiger, a member of the Muskogee (Creek) Nation and chairman of the United Indian Nations of Oklahoma, said tribal governments support school language preservation programs that could be harmed by the measure."

Instead of supplying the media with yawn-worthy grievances, the grandstanders could stand to read section C of HB 1423.

Update: David Yeagley also dispenses some "reading is fundamental" advice to his brethren.
