The Homeschooling Revolution

November 15, 2006

Of E-Schools and Icebergs

While we were in Eskimoville (Is it PI to call it that?), we visited Ellyn and Kyle Brown. (We met them in Kona.) The couple - whose only child is a Marine - live in a comfy hilltop house in Anchorage with glorious vistas. Over a yummy crab dinner, we learned that Ellyn, a snowshoe racing champ and a school teacher, competed in the 2005 Antarctica Marathon! She traveled 12,000 miles, by boat, to run those 26.2 miles.

Interestingly, the marathon is sponsored by Capella University, a growing online school. Capella notes that the marathon course "loops through scientific research bases of Uruguay, Chile, China, and Russia."

I guess this is the race to compete in if runners want curious scientists or chinstrap penguins to gawk at them.

Here's Ellyn crossing the finish line in Antarctica.
