Sparkly, who has a home ed news blog, passed along this op ed about ed. reform in Russia. It's written by Yulia Kharlamova, a political scientist.
The Commissarette with the pretty first name sounds like she could land a plum job with the NEA, since she views education as the cure-all for every societal problem. She is also a mind-reader who assumes the worst about her fellow countrymen and countrywomen who have a bent for the homeschooling way.
Writes Dr. Kharlamova: "The project’s promotion of homeschooling should not deceive anyone either. What is worse, the idea of providing financial compensation to parents who agree to tutor their children at home may be a dangerous temptation. Some impoverished families may agree not to send their children to school in exchange for this financial reward. Then a steep rise in illiteracy will become inevitable."
More from Sparkly: She had the same reaction, as I did, over the 'never been taught' phrase.
