Wid III's basketball team has entered the tournament stage of the season, so we, the fans, get to see new teams compete in OKC. Yesterday, the Southwestern Christian Eagles played a team from Haviland, Kansas, the Barclay College bears. They weren't particularly athletic, but they were scrappy and had a 6'9" center. The Ironman and I got to talking to one of Barclay students - the polite Elizabeth Gilligan - who turned out to be a homeschool grad. She plays for the Lady Bears' hoops team and is a transfer student.
Elizabeth told us she wanted to attend a small, Christian school and chose Barclay because the student body is under 100. The fact that an academic institution that tiny could put together an intercollegiate athletic program is remarkable.
Barclay is reaching out to home scholars in other ways. Click on the school's "academic programs," and you'll discover that the distance learning program is dubbed "Home College."
Update: Woohoo! The Eagles are playing in the championship game. Tonight (2-25) at 7:00 p.m. at Mid-America Christian University.
